Wittnauer produced some really cool looking watches about 40 years ago (see?), but we don't feature them on Hodinkee that often. No real reason behind that, sometimes things just are because they are. Today we did stumble across a really cool vintage Wittnauer Professional chronograph. It is cool for a few reasons...The first reason we like this Wittnauer are its looks. This professional dial is really something unique. It is a deep chocolate brown but features an orange and white checkerboard outer ring. We've never seen anything like this on any watch, although we have seen checkerboard used before.The second reason we really like this Wittnauer is that it features a legendary (we realize we use that word a lot, but not sure how else to say it) movement, the Valjoux 72 chronograph movement. Many of you out there may recognize this Valjoux as a "movement to the stars". What we mean by that is it was used in a host of different Royal Oak Chronograph Watches, many of them real classics.

Panerai Luminor circa 1935
It has a black face with a sub-seconds Panerai Luminor dial. What makes this LeCoultre Reverso even more attractive is that it is monogrammed on the back in an art deco typeface, reading "TJ". It was very common for a Reverso to be engraved with initials, a family crest, or coat of arms back then. Remember, those for whom the Reverso was designed were Polo players, which was (and is) a very aristocratic, blue-blooded group of people. One design note about the original Reverso - the winding crown on these watches are basically flush against the case to retain symmetry, although most of the 70 year old Reverso have had their crowns replaced. This is not the case on this watch, it is 100% original. This watch is being offered for just under 7,000 GBP, which, despite the rarity and quality of this watch, we think is a little on the high side. We would like to see it closer to 5,000 GBP or $10,000. That being Panerai Luminor said, this is a chance to pickup a truly classic very high-end watch in its more pure form.
